How to take care of my skin during pregnancy

Cómo cuidar mi piel durante el embarazo

During pregnancy, our bodies change at a dizzying pace: larger breasts, widening hips, an expanding belly... all of this causes our skin to undergo sudden changes that can lead to the dreaded stretch marks.

However, throughout these nine months, our skin experiences countless changes beyond stretch marks, and of which we have barely heard until we decide to become mothers.

Problems that affect our skin during pregnancy

As the months go by, our body experiences completely new changes for us. So much so that we start to learn about them almost as soon as they appear.

The appearance of stretch marks

Undoubtedly, this is one of the most common problems among pregnant women. Their appearance is particularly concerning, as there is currently no technique that definitively eliminates them.

Although they usually appear in the last months of pregnancy, when the skin has already suffered enough, the truth is that it is advisable to prevent their appearance even before pregnancy.

Generally, the most affected areas are usually the abdomen, buttocks, breasts, thighs, and groin, so these areas must be especially hydrated, especially if we start to see reddish stretch marks forming.

At Maminat, we have decided to share with you our magical recipe for anti-stretch mark oil made from rosehip, sweet almond, and wheat germ oil.

Appearance of dark spots

Without a doubt, skin spots (known as chloasma) are another major concern for pregnant women. According to dermatologist Marina Rodríguez (Quirón Salud), “90% of pregnant women may experience darkening of the skin in different locations (abdomen, neck, nipples, areolas, genitals, armpits, face).”

Although in most cases this skin pigmentation disappears, the truth is that they usually cause some concern, especially due to the lack of knowledge about this topic.

To prevent their appearance, we recommend using daily SPF 50+ sun protection, which includes physical filters, such as our Maminat sunscreen.

Remember that these spots are the result of an increase in certain melanocyte-stimulating hormones, which are the cells that give color to the skin. Although their appearance cannot be avoided in many cases, the truth is that sunscreen helps to make them not as dark.

Itchy skin

We barely hear about it, yet itching in the abdomen and breasts, as well as noticing drier skin, are some of the consequences of skin stretching.

Generally, itching is not associated with hives, flaking, or wounds, so it is usually resolved by applying a body moisturizer made with quality ingredients.

In addition, when showering, we recommend using fragrance-free gels that can promote dry skin. Ideally, you should use a silicone- and paraben-free shower gel, such as our Terreta gel, in order to soften, hydrate, and soothe the most sensitive and irritated skin.

If your months of gestation have coincided with summer, preferably wear loose, cotton clothing to avoid adding a greater sensation of itching.

Cellulite

Weight gain, cravings that we often give in to during pregnancy, and a more sedentary lifestyle can lead to the appearance of dreaded cellulite, especially in areas such as the buttocks, thighs, and legs.

In addition to eating a healthy diet and trying not to gain too much weight during pregnancy, there are small tricks that can help you avoid cellulite.

Massages with upward circular movements, starting from the feet to the thighs, can be of great help, especially if accompanied by a body moisturizer that provides hydration to the skin, but is not anti-cellulite.

It is also advisable to exercise as much as possible. Walking can be a good exercise to stimulate circulation.

Hair loss

During pregnancy, you will notice your hair is stronger and you may even experience an increase in body hair; however, this disappears postpartum.

According to dermatologist Marina Rodríguez, “after 1-5 months postpartum, massive hair loss from the scalp may occur, which can last 1 year. This is called telogen effluvium and is totally reversible.”

To keep our hair strong and prevent its loss, we recommend using sulfate- and paraben-free shampoos, such as Maminat natural shampoos, with which you will treat your scalp in a completely natural way.

During this stage, our mind and body are exposed to countless sudden changes in a very short time, so it is the best time for you to invest in taking care of yourself and your little one.
