Hi! I'm Natalia Olmo, and as the founder of Maminat and a mother of two little ones, I've learned, through my experience in the world of natural cosmetics, that babies' skin deserves very special attention. And do you know why? Because that delicate barrier that envelops them not only protects them from external agents but is also an essential part of their health and well-being.
Today, I want to share my thoughts with you about baby skincare and natural baby cosmetics, explain why we should avoid toxins in these early stages of life, and, above all, how we can achieve more effective and respectful care. I want to remind you that the skin is the largest organ we have, and everything we apply to its surface goes into our bodies. Therefore, caring for a baby's skin, my children's skin, your children's skin, or the skin of your little loved ones is, for me, a priority and a goal to achieve.
1. The skin of the little ones: a universe to discover
Imagine that the baby has just been born and suddenly finds himself surrounded by a world full of stimuli: temperature changes, clothing rubbing, caresses, air, even the sun. All of this is completely new to them, and their skin has to adapt quickly. If we add to that the fact that their acid mantle—the natural “defensive line”—is still maturing, it becomes clear that the risk of irritation or reactions is greater than in an adult.
That's why, from the first bath to the diaper change routine, choosing baby cosmetics free of aggressive substances can make a big difference. Personally, I always recommend looking at labels and ruling out ingredients like parabens, phthalates, sulfates, or silicones. The reason? They can disturb the skin's balance, promote allergies, and even interfere with the endocrine system.
I think that's more than enough reason for you to opt for natural and, if possible, organic products.
2. Why insist on natural baby cosmetics?
I know that sometimes it may seem simpler to choose a supermarket product that's on sale or that we see advertised all the time. But if you look at the ingredient list, you'll discover that many of them contain compounds you wouldn't want on your baby's skin.
That's why I've decided to launch Maminat Kids, our line of natural baby and children's cosmetics to care for them properly.
What do these products contain? Well, to begin with, we've selected plant-based and mineral-based ingredients that are less aggressive. For example, instead of sulfates, we use gentle cleansers based on coconut or sugars. Instead of parabens or phenoxyethanol, we've used natural preservatives or alternative preservation systems that won't alter the skin's microbiota.
Furthermore, this commitment to natural products not only protects your child's health but also benefits the planet by reducing polluting chemical processes in their manufacturing. For me, at least, I love knowing that by taking care of babies, I'm also taking a little care of the environment I'll leave them as a legacy, and you?
3. Cold manufacturing: pampering every ingredient
One of the topics I'm most passionate about when talking about cosmetics is cold manufacturing. If you've never heard of it, it's a process where we try to ensure that the manufacturing temperature doesn't exceed 30 °C. And what is the purpose of this precaution?
-
Protection of active ingredients: Many vitamins, enzymes, and essential oils are very sensitive to heat and degrade easily. By avoiding high temperatures, their efficacy remains practically intact.
-
Greater stability: Complex structures like exosomes (small vesicles full of proteins and lipids) or glycosylated molecules remain "as is," ensuring they do their job 100%.
In short, cold manufacturing is like preparing a gourmet dish without overcooking the ingredients: this way, you get all their flavor, nutrients, and benefits.
4. Postbiotics, exosomes, and glycation: three great allies
These names might sound a bit technical, but you'll see that in reality, they have a very simple logic and are very useful in baby skincare.
-
Postbiotics: These are the result of fermentation processes or metabolic reactions of bacteria and yeasts, where beneficial products or by-products for the skin are obtained. They do not act as a preservative that "annihilates" bacteria, but rather respect the skin's microbiota and help keep it balanced. This, in a baby, is essential for their natural defenses to strengthen rather than weaken.
-
Exosomes: Think of small "messenger capsules" that transport proteins, lipids, and genetic material between cells. In cosmetics, they are used to deliver active ingredients precisely where they are needed, increasing their effectiveness and reducing the risk of irritation because the entire process becomes more "intelligent" and targeted.
-
Glycation: This should not be confused with the harmful glycation we sometimes hear about in terms of aging. In the case of cosmetics, it refers to the controlled attachment of sugars to a molecule of interest (e.g., hyaluronic acid, collagen, or a key protein) to create "signaling sites." Simply put: it facilitates cell-ingredient communication, allowing the skin to better recognize the active ingredient and perform its function more precisely.
5. Ozonation: an extra boost of oxygen for the skin
A baby's skin, so fragile and constantly developing, also benefits greatly from ozone. By ozonating the ingredients, we introduce additional oxygen that helps balance the skin's oxidative system, strengthens the immune response, and promotes better healing if there are irritations or redness. Think of cases of diaper rash or small eczema: having products that stimulate cellular oxygenation is a very interesting bonus.
6. Star ingredients: chamomile, calendula, aloe vera, vitamins, and more
I've talked about production processes, but what about the classic ingredients that work wonders for babies?
-
Chamomile and calendula: These two plants are perfect for soothing irritations, treating small burns or eczema, and generally providing an anti-inflammatory and regenerating touch.
-
Bioactive aloe vera: Aloe hydrates both dry and oily skin and promotes skin renewal. In addition, its refreshing effect makes it a great relief for diaper redness.
-
Vitamins C and E: They form an antioxidant tandem that not only protects against UV radiation but also reinforces hydration and the stability of the cosmetic itself.
-
Sunflower and olive oils, cocoa and shea butters: Ideal for deep nourishment and retaining skin moisture, preventing dryness and reducing inflammation.
-
Zinc oxide: It is a classic in diaper creams because it accelerates healing and reduces irritation. An infallible aid against excessive moisture that irritates the bottom! Of course, at Maminat, we work with zinc oxide without nanoparticles.
-
Hyaluronic acid: Restores hydration levels, giving the skin flexibility and softness.
7. Examples of baby skincare products: "Al agua patos" and "Culito de bebé."
Maminat Kids started with two products that I consider essential for baby and child care: Al agua patos, our gel-shampoo, and Culito de bebé, which is our diaper cream.
8. Conclusion: a safe bet for your baby's health
As you can see, natural baby cosmetics are not just about eliminating aggressive ingredients, but about adding processes and substances that protect and improve skin health. And, in my experience, the results are noticeable: fewer irritations, fewer adverse reactions, and skin that looks and feels healthier.
You will notice a before and after when you apply, for example, our diaper cream to your baby's bottom. What was reddened will become calm, hydrated, and nourished skin.
I wanted to write this article to try and raise awareness about the amount of toxicity in many of the cosmetics we routinely apply. Imagine if all that harmful cocktail was put on a baby!
When you choose products with cold manufacturing, incorporation of postbiotics, exosomes, glycation, and ozonation, you are ensuring that your little one receives advanced, tested, and as respectful care as possible. In other words, you are investing in well-being, health, and environmental care.
I hope this journey has helped you better understand why baby skincare demands so much care and why natural baby cosmetics can be the perfect ally. Ultimately, it all comes down to something very simple: caring with affection, consistency, and the help of the best science and nature combined. If you have any questions, please let me know!
