It consists of a potassium salt obtained from sorbic acid, which is extracted from wild rowan berries (Sorbus Aucuparia). However, it is also possible to recreate potassium sorbate industrially with the help of various chemical methods.

The main function of potassium sorbate is to act as a preservative, as it has optimal properties to prevent microbial contamination. In this way, it manages to extend the shelf life of natural cosmetics.
In turn, this compound is completely compatible with the human body, since it metabolizes it into water and CO2. In fact, it is commonly found in intimate hygiene products, wipes, and facial fluids, as well as in food products (E-202).
