Should men and women use different cosmetics?

cosméticos distintos hombres y mujeres

You've probably noticed that there are cosmetics for men and for women, as if men's and women's skin required different products. But, in reality, behind this idea is more marketing than anything else. Just as a man and a woman can use the same hand soap, cosmetic products can also be identical. We'll explain it in detail.

What do dermatologists say about this? How do you choose a dermatological product? Is sex a valid criterion? The truth is, no. In fact, a woman and a man can have exactly the same skin type, with the same needs. The criteria that will tell you what cream or product to use will be others, for example:

- Skin type. There isn't a female and a male skin type as such. What does exist is oily skin, dry skin, atopic skin. This should be the first criterion for determining what product to use. And dermatologists truly attest to this. Therefore, first and foremost, pay attention to your skin type.

- The specific problem. Both a man and a woman can suffer from acne, rashes, itching, and dryness. It is based on these types of symptoms that a remedy should be prescribed, not according to sex. And, indeed, that's how professionals do it.

Is there any physiological difference?

Yes, there is one. Generally, men have slightly thicker and oilier skin, which often means they need less care; or, rather, they require a different type of care. After shaving, for example, men's skin can indeed get irritated, so moisturizing lotions will be just as important for them. There is another difference, but it has more to do with the tastes or preferences of each sex (and therefore, is not always true). Generally, men are sold smaller, more convenient formats that require less time, such as various creams that provide a single effect (the classic all-in-one) and so on.

This, again, is nothing more than a marketing technique. A woman and a man can use the same type of cosmetics, as long as they need them or they can be useful to them. What do companies do? They opt for a particularly convenient path for brands: a men's line and a women's line. They take advantage of the fact that, statistically, each sex presents more typical problems and use it to offer a wider variety of products, but this will not actually affect your skin.

That's why, in keeping with our ecological cosmetics line, we also offer unisex products. Many companies are actually starting to assimilate these types of solutions, which are much more convenient because they focus directly on the problem you want to solve or the effect you hope to achieve, and not so much on the format or the sales idea.

Therefore, the next time you go to buy a cosmetic product (you or your partner or your friends), keep in mind that you can both use it, as long as you share the same skin type or are looking to solve an identical problem.

Ultimately, sometimes it's good to do a little research, trust the experts, and turn a deaf ear to trends. And, just as organic cosmetics continue to gain ground, the same will happen with unisex products. They are much more convenient and, if you think about it, much more intelligent, as they focus on perfecting your skin, whatever it may be.
